Austin East KOA Holiday
ABOUT THE PLACE
Austin East KOA Holiday, Texas
We spent five nights here in May 2026. It also shows up in Episode 6. Our full field report is still being written, so here is what to know about the place itself.
The short version
Austin East KOA Holiday is a privately run campground on Blue Bluff Road on the east side of Austin, in Travis County. KOA lists RV sites, tent sites and cabins.
The neighborhood
- Lake Walter E. Long is close by. The City of Austin dammed Decker Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River, between 1966 and 1967 to create a cooling water supply for a power plant, and the lake is also used for recreation.
- City planning for the land around the lake produced two nature preserves, the Louis René Barrera Indiangrass Wildlife Sanctuary and the Decker Tallgrass Prairie Preserve.
- Downtown Austin is the state capital. The Texas Capitol was formally dedicated in 1888, is faced with Sunset Red granite from Burnet County, and according to the State Preservation Board stands 14.64 feet taller than the US Capitol.
- The Capitol was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
- Lady Bird Lake, a reservoir on the Colorado River downtown, is circled by the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail.
Good to know
- KOA lists the campground as open all year, and reservations go through KOA.
- Travis County sometimes issues burn bans, so check before planning a campfire.
Facts checked October 2026. Things change, so check the official site before you go.
