Lathrop: Colorado's First (and Oldest) Hidden Gem

Lathrop was a total surprise for us. We were passing through Southern Colorado in late September and decided to pull in for what we thought would be a quick pit stop. It turns out, we stumbled upon a piece of history—this was Colorado’s very first state park, established back in 1962.

Because it was late in the season, we had the place almost entirely to ourselves. It was just us and one other trailer in the whole park, which gave Rindo plenty of room to explore. It was the perfect way to kick off our first official state park visit in the new RV.

Sunsets and Surprise Volcanoes

’ve lived in Colorado for over 50 years, but the sunset here still managed to floor me. Watching the sky turn over the Spanish Peaks was hands down one of the best moments of the trip.

The real kicker, though, was the history lesson on the drive in. We found out that Colorado actually has volcanoes. We had no idea we were camping in the shadow of ancient volcanic dikes and igneous rock formations. It’s pretty cool to realize that even after five decades of living here, there are still massive things to learn about our home state.

Exploring on Two Wheels

We unloaded the ebikes and spent the afternoon riding the entire perimeter of the park. Using the bikes has become a total game-changer for us—it allows us to scout the entire area and see the transition from the high plains to the foothills without having to unhook the truck.

The Zen Moment

Sitting by the lake at dusk and realizing how much is still out there to discover right in our own backyard.

The Verdict: We’ll Be Back

The only downside was that we didn’t stay long enough to film a class. The scenery was incredible and would have made a perfect “studio” backdrop, but our schedule didn’t allow for a full shoot this time. We’re already planning to come back in the future, specifically to get some yoga on film here. If you’re traveling through the area, Lathrop is definitely worth a stop.
